Locate and repair cracked laterals and broken mainline pipe without tearing up more of the yard than needed.
A broken irrigation pipe in Peoria raises three local questions before the shovel comes out: where to shut the water off, what else is buried in the same trench line, and whether the water on the surface is breaking the city's runoff rule while it waits for repair.
Peoria's conservation page tells residents that when a valve is stuck and the system runs endlessly, the step is to turn off the outdoor water at the backflow device and then repair the problem. The same shutoff is the natural first move for a burst lateral on the irrigation side. Peoria's backflow program places devices on the supply line as close as possible to the meter, and names the pressure vacuum breaker as the device that can sit on the supply to landscape irrigation, so the shutoff is often in the same spot. If the break is between the meter and that device, or the water cannot be stopped there, Peoria lists its water leak line at (623) 773-7160 and an after-hours water emergency line at (623) 245-5201, and asks people not to call 911 for water issues.
Peoria's leak guidance is blunt: these leaks usually require digging to find, but always make sure to know what is below with Arizona 811. The city's water services contact list includes Blue Stake 811 for the same reason. Irrigation lines often share space with gas, electric and communication lines, and a quick excavation to fix a cracked fitting can become a far bigger problem. Hand digging near marked lines and exposing only as much pipe as the repair needs keeps the job small. Peoria's Water FAQ lists older pipes, construction near pipes, defective materials and poor workmanship as the usual causes of breaks on its own mains, and the same causes turn up on yard lines. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension notes that caliche layers in desert soils block roots and water from moving deeper; on a dig that can mean hard ground and water that has spread sideways along the pipe trench, so the break may be some distance from the wet spot. The leak signs guide explains how to narrow it down first.
A Peoria pipe repair cuts back to sound pipe, uses matching pipe and fittings, lets solvent-welded joints set before pressure returns, and backfills so the pipe is supported. Before the trench is closed, the line is pressurized and watched, and every station on the run is tested. Until it is fixed, keep the affected zone off. City Code 13-36(d), quoted on Peoria's conservation page, makes it unlawful to let irrigation water run onto streets, alleys or another person's property, and a mainline break that surfaces at the curb does exactly that. Monsoon storms bring their own damage; the monsoon damage guide covers post-storm checks. The general method is on the pipe repair service page, and finding the break is on irrigation leak detection in Peoria. All Peoria services are on the Peoria hub.

The mainline runs from the supply to the valves and stays under pressure all the time, so a break leaks around the clock. Laterals run from each valve to its heads and only hold pressure while that zone runs, so a lateral break shows up only during that station's cycle.
